This is a group show for the fresh graduates in MIA, serving as a platform for both learning and self exposure. There are a total of six artists participating in this show, all embracing different styles and themes for their work. This show displays their works during their final semester in MIA, thus a display of their learning results as well, only this time, with the public as their assessor instead of lecturers.
Under construction was a title decided at the beginning of the exhibition, representing our status as fresh graduates whose future and career are still under construction. It is only a play of words when we thought about it initially.
But personally, I interpret the term “Under Construction” as an action which we artists do a lot, as we are generally people who create something out of nothing. I suppose despite the diversity of themes and artworks that can be seen in the art scene, the initial motif of it might be nothing more than an idea, or even a prank, which then undergo a process of realization.
The outcome of this realization, the artwork, brings different, say, effects, or impact towards the society. Some works are rather subtle — when compared to some rather radical works which can have a sound impact when said works are presented to the public— expressions of personal emotion or inner world of the artist, which would be like dripping water into a vast ocean, while some —like the works of Ai Wei Wei— which surrounds itself around controversy, using the controversy to speak about the controversy, would definitely be on the opposite end of the spectrum if there was one, like sinking an entire island.
I think that although not in a conventional way, these pieces and the people behind them are all in their own scale and method, contributing to the construction of the society. Although it might not seem so, a work of self expression still has its impact, albeit on a more personal level. It brings together the feelings of people, who knows, it might evoke something huge.
Artists might not have as direct an influence as politicians or economists have on the course we go, but we still are pushing the minds of people forward, either by pushing on boundaries or by highlighting something or setting an example, who knows, which I believe are the exact fundamental elements of change.
By getting together this time, I won’t say that we are constructing the society, but I think we can agree that by holding this show, we had set up an example to future Fine Art graduates, a construction in itself.
The show will be coming to its end in a few days. This version of interpretation on our title is something which I came to realize when we are halfway through the show. Me and my friends, we might have different interpretations and thoughts about it, as one of them told me that it was due to the passion for art that makes people willingly go through this molding process to construct themselves into the ideal which they see and aspire to be: an artist.
Which it might be true as well.
