ESSAY 1 : Lim Ai Woei

BIOGRAPHY

Lim Ai Woei is an assistant curator in National Visual Arts Gallery since 2007 December. I have been curate or coordinate in exhibitions of pioneer artists, collector, mid-career artists and young contemporary artists in National Visual Arts Gallery and local private art galleries since 2008.

The exhibition I have curate or coordinate in National Visual Arts Gallery as: Chuah Thean Teng tribute exhibition-“Teng: An Apprciation” (2008-2009), “Mosaic of Malaysia” by Zhang Zhou (2009), The Art of Cheng Haw Chien (2010), Wayang U-Wei Angkat Saksi (2011), Conceptual: BSLN collection (2012), Members Only (2012), “Huang Yao: A Remarkable Guest” (2013), “Salut 55!” (2014) and “Retrospective Dr Choong Kam Kow: An Evolving Creative Journey from 1950s” (2014).

My job as a researcher of Research unit, Research and Exhibition Department, I have strong research of Malaysia early years Art History and archival of local artists, major in Malaysian Chinese pioneer/veteran artist background and National Visual Arts Gallery collections. My network also let me connect artists with art institution, galleries of local and Asia countries.

Graduated from Kuala Lumpur College of Art, my background trained as a visual artist, specializes in painting. I started to participate in Penang local exhibition since teenage and still joint some local and international group exhibition.

I have strong knowledge of eastern (Chinese scroll) and western painting handling, conservation and restoration, been jointed conservation workshop of Dr. Nicole Tse, University of Melbourne and Prof Lin Huan-Shen of Taipei Conservation Center and local institution conservation workshop.

I also write for local Chinese media to introduce Malaysian contemporary artists’ exhibition.

Active as an art mover and art lover in the field of Fine Art, I have been reviewed in some local media like
